Sidney Lanier won a close race for the UPI Class 4A State Championship in 1964. Lanier nosed out Tuscaloosa, Tarrant and Coffee to wrap up their second title since 1961.
The title keeps at least one version of a state championship in Montgomery for the seventh consecutive season. Lee won titles in 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962 and 1963.
The Poets had little trouble with the first nine opponents before a season ending loss to Lee.
Coach Bobby Wilson's squad was led by Pat Riley, Richmond Flowers and Buddy Hardwich in the backfield along with Bob Childs anchoring the line.
Only Tarrant and Coffee finished the season undefeated but were thought to have easier schedules along the way. Tarrant played three class 3A opponents and Coffee played five.
